Spanaway, Washington is a small town (“census-designated place,” officially) with a population of 27,227 that is near Parkland and about 14 miles south of Tacoma. Just because you haven’t heard of this idyllic place doesn’t mean that others haven’t—Spanaway is a song (by The Movielife), an album title (from Seaweed), and is mentioned in another song (Neko Case’s “The Needle Has Landed”). If you think that small towns don’t see a lot of action, you may be surprised to learn that in 1951 Lieutenant John W. Hodgkin flew his Piper J-3 Cub aircraft from Spanaway Air Strip to the top of Mt. Rainier and was immediately taken to task by the federal court for landing in a national park.

Or revisit your youth (or your parents’ youth) at Rollin’ 253 Skate Center where you’ll roller skate to some classic ‘80s music.
